Screenshots communicate the happy path and almost nothing else. The gap between a beautiful comp and a working interface is entirely made of states nobody drew: what the list looks like with 400 items, what the button says while it is saving, what happens when the request fails at 3am.
The acceptance test matters as much as the spec. If the criterion is an opinion, the build will be argued about; if it is a screenshot diff against a named state, it can only pass or fail.
The fix, in four steps
- Name the five states per component Default, loading, empty, error, overflow. Add permission and disabled where relevant.
- Write the copy inside each state Most rework is a missing sentence, not a missing pixel.
- Give motion numbers, not adjectives “Snappy” is not a spec. 180ms, cubic-bezier(.32.72,0,1) is.
- Make the diff the acceptance test Screenshot comparison against each named state, in the same viewport, before sign-off.
